How much does a GEO agency cost for an ecommerce brand?
Written from hands-on work in: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), AI search visibility tracking, AI referral attribution in Shopify and GA4, Structured data and llms.txt.
Short answer
Published ecommerce GEO retainers mostly sit between $2,000 and $6,000 a month, with one-time AI visibility audits around $2,200 to $5,000. Boutique Shopify programs are quoted at $5,000 to $10,000 a month, and enterprise work runs $25,000 and up. Price tracks scope: catalog size, engines tracked, content volume, off-site outreach and whether the agency implements or only advises.
Key takeaways
- Ecommerce-specific GEO retainers are published at $2,000 to $6,000 a month, and a one-time ecommerce audit at $2,200 to $5,000.
- The widely repeated $1,500 to $50,000 a month band is real as a spread, but at least one pricing analysis notes it usually circulates without attribution.
- Two agencies that publish GEO-specific retainers both start at $3,000 a month, which is a more useful anchor than any band.
- DIY is cheap on tools (roughly $29 to $499 a month) but expensive in team time, because tools measure visibility and do not fix it.
- Do not pay for guaranteed AI placements, link packages or manufactured mentions. Google says it ignores inauthentic mentions and that no third-party tool sees its internal systems.
What do GEO agencies actually charge ecommerce brands in 2026?
Most ecommerce GEO pricing that is published lands between $2,000 and $10,000 a month, with enterprise programs above that. The table below lists only figures we could open and confirm on the source page. Treat every number as a public list price or a reported range, not a quote for your store.
| Source | What it prices | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Mentionable ecommerce GEO guide | Ecommerce GEO monthly retainer | $2,000 to $6,000 a month |
| Mentionable ecommerce GEO guide | One-time ecommerce GEO audit | $2,200 to $5,000, scaled by product categories covered |
| Passionfruit Shopify roundup | Boutique GEO for Shopify brands | $5,000 to $10,000 a month |
| Passionfruit Shopify roundup | Integrated mid-market GEO plus SEO | $12,000 to $30,000 a month |
| Pepper pricing analysis | Agencies publishing GEO retainers | WebFX from $3,000 a month; RevvGrowth $3,000 (10 articles) and $8,000 (40 articles) |
| Nutshell GEO cost guide | All GEO agencies, by business size | Small $1,500 to $5,000; medium $5,000 to $25,000; enterprise $25,000 to $50,000 a month |
| Nutshell GEO cost guide | Project-based work | $5,000 to $50,000 a project |
Two things stand out. First, the ecommerce-specific numbers cluster at the low end of the broad market band, because a focused DTC program tracks a few hundred buyer prompts, not thousands of B2B keywords. Second, Pepper points out that the $1,500 to $50,000 range repeated across the industry usually appears with no attribution, and that the two agencies publishing GEO-specific retainers both start at exactly $3,000 a month. We find that anchor more honest than a fifty-fold band.
What is included at each price tier?
The lower tiers buy monitoring and on-site fixes; the higher tiers add off-site work, which is where most of the recommendation lift for a product brand comes from. Mentionable splits its own ecommerce range the same way: the $2,000 to $3,200 end covers prompt monitoring, reporting and feed optimization, while the $4,500 to $6,000 end adds monitoring across more AI engines, editorial outreach and marketplace optimization.
| Tier | Usually included | Usually missing |
|---|---|---|
| Audit only | Prompt test across engines, source map of who gets cited, technical and schema review, action list | Any implementation |
| Entry retainer | Monthly prompt tracking, product page and FAQ rewrites, schema, feed and catalog hygiene, reporting | Editorial outreach, reviews strategy, PR |
| Mid retainer | Everything above plus comparison content, editorial and roundup outreach, review programs, multi-engine tracking | Large content volume, multi-market work |
| Enterprise | Large content engines, digital PR, technical SEO at catalog scale, custom analytics | Usually nothing, but the price reflects headcount |
Content volume is the clearest price lever you can see in public pricing. RevvGrowth's two published tiers, as reported by Pepper, differ mainly by article count: 10 articles at $3,000 and 40 at $8,000. Before you compare quotes, convert each one into deliverables per month so you are comparing work, not labels.
What drives the cost of a GEO program up or down?
Six variables explain almost every GEO quote we have seen. Ask each agency to state its assumption for each one in writing.
- Catalog and category breadth. Audits are priced by the number of product categories covered (Mentionable). A single-hero-SKU supplement brand needs far less than a 400-SKU beauty catalog.
- Engines and prompts tracked. Covering ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Copilot costs more than ChatGPT alone, both in tool fees and in analyst time.
- Implementation versus advice. An agency that edits your product pages, schema and feeds costs more than one that hands you a list. Cheap retainers are often advice only.
- Off-site authority work. Editorial outreach, expert reviews and comparison placements take the most senior time. They are also the work AI engines lean on when choosing which brand to name.
- Technical complexity. Headless builds, heavy JavaScript rendering and faceted navigation push you toward technical specialists, whose published pricing starts higher.
- Reporting depth. Tying AI-referred sessions and orders to revenue in Shopify and GA4 takes setup. It is also the only report that tells you whether the spend worked.
Is DIY with a tool cheaper than hiring an agency?
DIY is cheaper in cash and more expensive in time. Visibility tools tell you whether you appear; they do not rewrite a product page, earn a roundup mention or fix a feed. Entry prices reported in 2026 comparison articles:
| Tool | Reported entry price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | $29 a month (Lite) | Ecommerce Paradise |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99 a month per domain; Semrush One bundle $199 | Ecommerce Paradise |
| Peec AI | About EUR 89 to 95 a month | Brandlight |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | $129 base, or $199 a month per AI index | Ecommerce Paradise |
| Profound | $99 a month per Writesonic; $499 Lite per Ecommerce Paradise | Sources disagree |
| Scrunch AI | From $250 a month | Writesonic |
A realistic DIY budget is one tool plus four to eight hours a week from someone who can edit product pages, write comparison content and pitch editors. If that person already exists on your team, DIY is a reasonable first 90 days. If not, the tool becomes a dashboard nobody acts on. On Reddit the question comes up directly, for example in Are GEO agencies worth it? Is it better to just DIY?, and the recurring answer is that the fee is only worth it when the agency does work your team cannot.
What should never be in a GEO retainer?
Guarantees, link packages and fake mentions should never be in a GEO retainer, because the engines either ignore them or penalize them. Google's own AI optimization guide says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it seems, that you can ignore unnecessary AI text files and content chunking tactics, and that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.
- Guaranteed placement in ChatGPT, Perplexity or AI Overviews. OpenAI states product results are selected independently and are not ads (OpenAI Help). Nobody can sell that slot.
- Bulk backlink or directory packages relabeled as GEO links.
- Seeded Reddit or review-site posts from fake accounts.
- An llms.txt generator sold as the main deliverable. Shopify already serves /llms.txt natively (Shopify Help).
- A visibility score with no link to sessions, orders or revenue.
It also helps to know how much of GEO is classic SEO. Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO from its point of view (Google Search Central), and one agency founder told Digiday that 80 percent of GEO is good fundamental SEO. If you already pay an SEO agency, ask which GEO tasks are genuinely new before you pay twice.
What should a $50K to $1M a month DTC brand budget for GEO?
For a brand in that band, the relevant reference points are the ecommerce-specific ranges, not the enterprise tiers: $2,200 to $5,000 for an audit and $2,000 to $6,000 a month for a focused retainer (Mentionable). The $25,000 and up tiers are priced for large catalogs and multi-market teams.
- Start with a baseline. Run 30 to 50 real buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews and record who gets named and which sources are cited. This can be free if you do it yourself.
- Set up tracking before spending. Make sure AI referrals show as their own channel in Shopify and GA4. Our guide on tracking ChatGPT traffic in Shopify and GA4 covers the setup.
- Buy implementation, not reports. At this revenue level, a retainer that rewrites product pages and earns third-party mentions beats a larger one that only monitors.
- Review at 90 days. Early signals typically show in four to eight weeks, with more consistent citations over three to six months (WebFX). Judge on prompt share and AI-referred orders, not screenshots.
Why bother at this stage? Because the traffic is already moving. At one supplement store we run, ChatGPT visits grew 6x in under a year (141 sessions in September 2025 to 885 in August 2026, US Shopify data), and most landed on product pages. That is a market shift, not a campaign result, and it means your product pages are now answering AI-referred shoppers whether you planned for it or not.
What recurring work should sit behind a GEO fee?
Whatever the price, a retainer should buy repeatable work you can inspect. This is the recurring work in our own AI search program, and it doubles as a checklist to price any quote against.
- A weekly AI Answer Lab. A fixed library of buying questions asked weekly in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity from a US location, scored on whether you are named, named first, which sites are cited and share of voice against the top rivals over time.
- Look-alike domain checks. AI engines sometimes cite copycat stores that use a brand's name. Someone should be looking for them.
- Verified bot data. AI bot hits in your server logs checked against each company's published IP ranges, with spoofed bots ignored. Most requests claiming to be AI bots in our own logs were scanners faking the user agent.
- A clean paid and organic split. Paid ChatGPT ad clicks (advertiser UTMs such as utm_medium=cpc plus an oppref click ID) reported apart from organic AI referrals, so neither number flatters the other.
- Shipped crawlability fixes. Answer-first pages, schema, AI crawlers allowed, and content that renders without JavaScript. Animated counters that show 0 in static HTML are a common miss; we render real values server side.
- A monthly report with the share of voice trend and AI-referred sessions and orders from Shopify.
This work is cheap to verify, which is the point. On our own site, the logs showed ChatGPT-User opening our homepage 21 times between September 14 and 24, 2026 (verified against OpenAI's published IP ranges), about twice a day, and one click-through tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com that booked a strategy call about a minute after landing. If an agency cannot show you evidence at that level for your own site, ask what the fee is paying for. Our guides on choosing a GEO agency and DTC agency red flags cover the rest of the vetting.
How does Succession Media price AI search work?
We do not publish a price list, because the scope for a single-SKU supplement brand and a multi-category beauty brand are not comparable. Pricing depends on scope, we work month to month, there is no setup fee, and the first step is a free growth audit where we run your buying questions through the main AI engines and show you who gets named instead of you.
AI search runs in the same loop as our creative, media buying and CRO work, because AI-referred shoppers land on the same product pages your ads send traffic to. You can see what the service covers on our AI search optimization page or book a free growth audit.
FAQ
How much does a one-time AI visibility audit cost?
Published ecommerce audit pricing sits around $2,200 to $5,000, scaled by the number of product categories covered, according to Mentionable's ecommerce GEO guide. Broader project-based GEO work is quoted at $5,000 to $50,000 by Nutshell. A useful audit should include a prompt test across engines, a map of which sources get cited, and a prioritized fix list you can act on without the agency.
Why do GEO price ranges vary so much between sources?
Most published ranges mix very different buyers: a small store buying monitoring and an enterprise retailer buying a content and PR engine. The spread also reflects whether implementation is included. Pepper's analysis notes the common $1,500 to $50,000 band usually appears without attribution, while the two agencies publishing GEO-specific retainers both start at $3,000 a month.
Is a GEO agency worth it if I already pay for SEO?
Only if it does work your SEO agency does not. Google treats AI search optimization as SEO, so crawlability, schema and helpful content overlap. The genuinely additional work for a DTC brand is prompt-level tracking, product feed and catalog hygiene for AI shopping, and earning third-party mentions in the sources AI engines cite for your category.
Can I start with a tool instead of an agency?
Yes. Entry tools start around $29 a month for Otterly.AI and $99 for the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, per 2026 comparisons. A tool is a good way to set a baseline and check whether AI visibility matters in your category. It will not fix anything on its own, so budget team time for page rewrites and outreach.
What red flags should I watch for in a GEO proposal?
Guaranteed placements in ChatGPT or AI Overviews, bulk link packages, seeded Reddit posts, an llms.txt file sold as the main deliverable, and reporting that stops at a visibility score. OpenAI says its product results are not ads and are selected independently, so nobody can sell a guaranteed slot.
When to bring in Succession Media
Succession Media is a DTC growth agency for Shopify brands doing $50K to $1M a month, strongest in supplement, wellness and health categories. This guide's topic maps to our AI Search Optimization (AEO + GEO) work. It is worth a call if:
- Your GEO quotes list reports and tools but no named implementation work on your product pages.
- A proposal promises guaranteed ChatGPT placements or bundles link packages into the retainer.
- You want AI search, CRO and Meta handled by one team, month to month, with no setup fee.
- You cannot tell whether an existing retainer moved share of voice because nobody set a baseline at the start.

How we researched this guide
We asked ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions founders actually ask on this topic, reviewed the pages those engines cite, and checked every figure above against its original source. Numbers we could not verify were left out. The method sections come from how we run ai search (aeo + geo) work on live Shopify accounts; client names and client numbers are never published without permission. Last reviewed .
